Let’s talk about the first restaurant I went to when I got to California: Suncafe in Studio City.I was tired from the flight out, and had to be up really early the next morning to get to Anaheim for the first day of VidCon, so my friend Mercy (who I was staying with) suggested Suncafe as one of her favorite restaurants. It wasn’t too far from her place, so we didn’t have to travel far.
I’m sad that I didn’t get many pictures of the place, but I got self conscious and was tired, so here we are with three measly pictures. There was an outside eating area out front with a fire pit surrounded by a garden that looked like a really nice place to hang out and have some drinks.
The menu looked really good, and just like I’ve said in every other vegan restaurant review of California: It was really hard deciding what to get. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on the first place I went to, but I also wanted to not be confined to the cheaper items.
I ended up chosing the portobello mushroom sandwich (and not the mac and cheese, which I’m now cursing myself for because I had every intention of going back during the trip and never made it) with the kale salad as a side. I was apparently trying to be a little bit healthier, not that it mattered during the rest of the trip. I did try to portobello sandwich specifically to try the cashew cheese it had on it. And I really like mushrooms. It was a really good sandwich. Nothing too special, but it wasn’t bad at all. I’d get it again.
The kale was so good. I want to try and recreate the dressing that was on it. I usually end up getting fries or some other potato side, so I’m glad that I picked the kale and tried it. I want the recipe for the dressing!
Mercy got the raw lasagna, and it was really good. The layers of “noodles” were zucchini, and it had a pesto sauce with cashew ricotta.
We also got the most amazing shakes as per Mercy’s recommendation. I’m not going to lie to you, I can’t remember the exact one we had. I know, how can it be good when I can’t remember it. But this was almost a year ago. I have a bad memory. Anyways, I’m fairly positive it was the Sweet Kale Shake (because I thought to myself that I was eating a lot of kale). I swear I got pictures, I just have no clue where they went. It was huge and amazing and I made the mistake of going to the website to look at the menu and now I want them all. And I am over 2,000 miles away
Even though this was the first restaurant I went to, it was one of my favorites. I had some really great food while in LA, but the combination of the menu (which has a lot of raw/gluten free options), and the atmosphere of the place itself I know I would go back more if it were closer.
